11:30-12:30 - Panel Discussion 8c Add to Calendar

  • Carbon Reduction Policies
While leading global cities have been widely hailed in driving climate policy by reducing operational carbon emissions of buildings, embodied carbon has gone largely unaddressed. In 2017, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law the Buy Clean California Act, which triggered the emergence of embodied carbon as a key consideration in building decarbonization. Now through policies to reduce the embodied carbon of concrete such as the City of Portland and Marin County Low Carbon Concrete Codes, new attention is being paid to carbon emissions created during the manufacture, transport and construction of building materials. This panel will address emergent embodied carbon reduction policies, the associated challenges of databases and benchmarks, finding practical solutions, and development of new resilient models that embrace the circular economy.
